Facts About George Washington

George Washington served as the nation’s President from 1789-1797 and is one of the more colorful patriots in our country’s history. Some interesting facts about the Father of our Country.

George Washington owned 4 sets of presidential dentures. Some were held together by springs and gold plates. There is also a tale that most people dispute as inaccurate, which has Paul Revere (also know as our Midnight Rider) crafting one set of George’s choppers.

The dentures themselves were crafted of tusks of hippopotami, elephant ivory, cow teeth, lead, & deceased people’s teeth. The elephant ivory has a tendency to yellow whereas the hippo’s tusk retains its whiteness.

At the time of George Washington’s inauguration he had only 1 original tooth.

The famous story of George Washington chopping down his father’s cherry tree with an axe given to him by his father is false. The story was fabricated by Parson Mason Locke Weens and included in the 1806 5th Edition of his book, The Life and Memorable Actions of George Washington.

George Washington did not wear a wig to hide a receding hairline. However, he did powder his natural hair so it would match his wing in the event any escaped from under the realm.

George was one of the first American scientific farmers, importing plants, shrubs, and trees from all around the globe. He and Thomas Jefferson were among the first to set out pecan trees. He also experimented with crop rotation.

George Washington died at the age of 67 and many modern day physicians believe his death was attributed to strep throat. On December 12, 1799, Washington rode for about five hours over his farmland in what began as snow, then changed to hail and cold rain. Once he returned home he opted to eat dinner, not taking time to remove the wet clothing. The following day he became very seriously ill and died December 14, 1799.
