The House on the Hill

A Free Online Love Story

From the balcony of the house on the hill, Zane aimed the expensive high-powered binoculars towards the yellow house next door searching for little Nadine as he heard her high voice quivering through the short distance.

Where was Jane? She was a cracker-jack mom, even though she was the kid's aunt. An unfortunate accident involving Nadine's parents had left her orphaned, good-hearted Jane adopting her without hesitation. And how the two of them were managing under the tiny one bedroom home was a puzzle to him.

He'd been inside only once, when he'd welcomed Jane into the area shortly after she had arrived two years ago. Not a handful of days had gone by when the tragedy had unfolded. During the short span before Nadine had arrived, he had shared many warm moments in Jane's company and had even imagined the makings of an intimate relationship. And since he'd experienced those desires for her, he hadn't been able to place them from him. That's what a real relationship should be like, he reminisced.

Jane was never far from his thoughts, although he highly suspected the relationship was one-sided. After Nadine had arrived, Jane had become aloof. Oh, there had been a few occasions when she'd let her guard down, then she had quickly reconstructed the invisible wall, perhaps assuming that Zane wouldn't have room in his heart for a relationship which had a small child in tow.

Jane. Beautiful woman; dazzling smile, long golden hair, tanned skin and bright blue eyes that her young niece had been fortunate to inherit.

There had been a volley of activity at Jane's the past couple of weeks; two huge yard sales and only last weekend, she had set up a booth outside which contained an assortment of her exquisite pastries.

The man that married Jane would not only get a beautiful wife, but an excellent chef. Zane couldn't remember tasting a better eclair than last Saturday. Shame that more interest hadn't materialized, as he appeared to be her only customer. They had shared warm conversation, Nadine performing cartwheels on the front lawn that looked more like a green carpet than lawn.

Both he and Jane had laughed together, and for a brief moment he thought he had glimpsed a wistful look in her eyes. Or had he just imagined such?

"There you are!" he jerked out, spying Nadine through the binocs. Sitting on the grass. Not good; she was just asking for an ant bite. Crying like a well-witch, too. Poor darling. And no Jane in sight. Perhaps he should investigate - just to make certain that the child was okay. Then too, he might have an opportunity to see the lovely Jane. He only hoped that Nadine hadn't landed in an ant den.

Setting aside the binocs, he descended the long flight of stairs. Unlike Jane's tiny abode, his manor was more castle than house. At one time, the tiny yellow house had been the servant's quarters. His great grandfather had sold it during the depression as times were hard.

As he neared Nadine, she jerked up her head, her pretty face shrouded with tears. However, her mood greatly improved when she saw him and she rose and ran quickly to fall into his outstretched arms.

"There, there little darling," Zane soothed, running a comforting hand over the back of Nadine's long mop of hair. "Why are you crying? And where is Aunty Jane?"

"She's gone, Mr. Zane," Nadine informed, hugging closer to him as he picked her up and surveyed the beautifully landscaped yard. Jane had a green thumb, alright.

"Gone?"

"Uh huh. Went to find a job. We don't have anything to eat," Nadine confided, pulling back and looking into Zane's puzzled face. "I start school when the leaves fall."

He batted his eyes at the child, both amused and concerned. Amused because she had grouped several topics together, and concerned due to the nature of the topics.

"Aunty Jane left you alone?" he asked for confirmation, disturbed that a five year old would be left alone. Jane only needed to ask and he would have been glad to look after the little one.

"Oh no, Aunty would never do that," Nadine assured. "She got a sitter. Gave her a necklace to watch me for two hours. A very pretty necklace. So she could hunt for a job. But not with a gun."

"No, not with a gun," Zane nodded thoughtfully.
