Christmas Day The old man was dead. The kitchen knife was dripping with fresh blood,

blizzard scheduled to arrive before sunrise…..the tracks would be covered. Yes….it just might work. Two Months Later - Late February Sheriff Austin Rivers narrowed his dark eyes at
his two deputies as they entered the jailhouse, their entrance inviting the
frigid winter temperatures into the room, Austin certain that his hat was
supporting six-inch icicles by the time they wrestled the door shut. “Sheriff,” Deputy Cletus Barns acknowledged as he
scooted out one of the worn wooden chairs in front of the ancient oak desk, the
legs scrapping across the floor and playing on Austin’s nerves like nails on a
blackboard. Deputy Joel Farris remained stone-faced as he
slid into the chair opposite of Cletus which had ’Johnny was here’ carved into
the seat. Austin had to wonder if Deputy Farris had a voice; the man had not
spoken a word since his arrival to this godforsaken area of Nevada three days
ago.
