Free Resume Template - Careers & Sample Resumes, Preparing for your future...

Preparing for the future is one of the more complicated problems that teenagers face, especially in the area of careers. Where do you begin? How can you deal with the pressure? Why does life have to be so complicated? Why can't we just buy a club and return to days of yore where men wrestled dinosaurs for food and women's biggest challenge was, "Which fur am I going to wear today?" So, where do you begin?

First of all, you need a plan. Begin thinking about which profession you'd like to pursue. If you have a hobby, or are interested in a particular subject at school such as science or art, try to direct your future to whatever it is that you enjoy. As long as you're going to have to work, at least you can do something that you like to do, day in and day out.

When you are ready to secure your first job, a business may require a resume before an interview can be scheduled. You may think, "Geeze, that's really great. I've never worked before and where in the Dickens am I going to learn how to prepare a resume?" The resume task may not be as overwhelming as you think. Start building your resume TODAY in order to prepare for 'that special first-job interview' day. Jot down any project or event that you've been involved with - such as a school committee, mowing a neighbor's lawn, a church-related event, etc. It doesn't matter how small this event might have been. The fact stands that you were involved, and it exhibits a dedication and drive to the potential employer.

How can you deal with the pressure of career choices? Take one small step at a time and focus on that step. Don't hop to the next step until you've completed the 'business' at hand. Always follow through. Be determined to succeed in whatever you do! Work out stress through activity that you enjoy. And relax; enjoy a hot cup of tea every now and then.

Your First Resume: A few examples of what you'll need to draft for that first interview are provided below for your use. Generally, a cover letter is not required for a first-time job. However, later in life you may find use of a cover letter, so I've included that example for you. I've also included some potential interview questions so you can prepare.

The Interview: Dress for success! It's much better to be overdressed than underdressed in the business world. 'THE' color to wear is something dark, preferably a navy hue. It represents professionalism. If you don't have a dark outfit, then wear what you have with pride. Arrive on time; better early than late. Fifteen minutes before your scheduled interview is perfect.

During your interview, ask questions when appropriate. Things that make a hit are questions about the business, such as, "Are you solely based in the USA? Where are your products sold? How many co-workers would I be working with? What would my basic job responsibilities be? Do you have a timeframe on when you'll be filling this position? Will I be notified or would you prefer that I call in a day or two for your decision?"

Responsibilities; that's a very good word to use. It's like a subliminal message to your Interviewer - that you are responsible.

The Aftermath of the Job Interview: After you've interviewed, resist calling the business to find out if they've made a decision on the open position unless they have directed you to do such. Work out your anxiousness by:

1) Writing a thank you note to your Interviewer. It's a great way to grab someone's attention.

2) Continue your job search as if you will not get the job you applied for. Who knows, you may stumble across an even better job!

3) If you don't get the job, keep upbeat. It's very tough these days with unemployment at such a high rate. Tell yourself that you will eventually land a job. Make a note that there are two very unfavorable times to be doing a job search. One is just before/after the holidays. The next is when school is dismissing for summer break. So, think smart and plan ahead if you desire a holiday job or a summer job.

4) Any letters of recommendation could prove very helpful in securing a first-time job.

Finally, good luck in whatever career path you take! Go get 'em!
