Political Stories & Political Musings

Democrat? Republican? Independent? Tea Party? What? Huh? I dunno anymore!! Frankly, as far as we're concerned, the whole darn system's broken. Keeping that in mind, we'll keep our Political Commentaries as non-partisan as possible. After all, as a voter it's your decision and your decision alone.

Political Ponderings - Why the Donkey & the Elephant?

How the Donkey & the Elephant became unofficial political symbols of the Republican & Democrat parties.

The unofficial symbolic Democratic Donkey and Republican Elephant are rather odd choices for political symbols - but what does one do when the eagle has already been taken by a nation? First off, obviously no one told the historic Republican party, "Guys. Look. There are NO elephants in America. Except.....at the er...zoo."  On the other hand, who wants to be a jack ass?

Andrew Jackson did and it's to his credit that the donkey became the fixed Democrat party symbol. Being cited by many as a jack ass, 'Jack'son used the tag to his advantage, the political gimmick quickly catching on after cartoonist Thomas Nast's cartoon rendering in Harper's Weekly Magazine around 1870.

But the er...buck didn't stop there. Nast hit a home run once more in Harper's Weekly Magazine four years later when he drew a donkey cloaked in the skin of a lion that was frightening away all of the other animals standing about, except an elephant which held the caption, "The Republican Vote". Obviously, Nast was a Democrat....

As the elephant and the donkey have not yet become official symbols of the Democrat and Republican parties, might we kick about the following choices that we pulled from an old trunk?

Why the Snake may be a better choice than the Donkey or Elephant - The snake is sly, slithery, likes to crawl on its belly and doesn't beat around the bush.

Why the Fox may be a better choice than the Donkey or Elephant - The fox is also sly, cunning and a little lazy, especially in the heat.

Why the Crocodile may be a better choice than the Donkey or Elephant - The crocodile is capable of shedding tears, and has a tough hide which is worth a bundle.

Why the Chameleon may be a better choice than the Donkey or Elephant - The chameleon is capable of changing colors and spends most of its time buried in the soil.

Why the Monkey may be a better choice than the Donkey or Elephant - A monkey is smart enough to punch out a chad.

Why the chicken may be a better choice than the Donkey or Elephant - A chicken knows how to cackle, lay rotten eggs, crow and strut. Oh. And they know how to be a chicken, too.

Hopefully, one day, one party will adopt the dove as their party symbol.

Politician 101 - What Not to Do in Order to Become a Bona Fide Politician

Tickle Feather is offering a short online course to politician hopefuls. Topics covered include manners, appropriate behavior, ethnic pitfalls as well as one course entitled, 'Banking on Political Success' for those with sticky fingers....

What 'Not to Do' to Become a Bona Fide Politician

- Whenever viewing someone of the opposite color, there's no need to point out such as most of us have eyes, and those that can't see generally don't give a hoot about skin color.

- Never make promises because promises are made to be broken - even wedding promises when politics are involved. However, if you do decide to date, choose that date wisely and marry without delay. One partner equals zillions of votes.

- Don't become so infatuated with money that you are able to recite all the faces found on money by heart.

- When vacationing, choose a sport or activity that is somewhere in between woodcutter and wind surfer. Voters tend to associate with politicians who share normal activities.

- You may want to consider wearing a camera on your lapel 24/7 for dispelling rumors. Although you can't always count on votes, you can always count on rumors.

- And last but not least, mind your manners. Don't go shooting anyone, or puking in anyone's lap, or......well, you get the picture.

Did You Know That My Opponent Voted Against That Bill?

Why would a perfectly good politician vote against a perfectly good Bill? Na-na-na-na, Na-na.

Gasp! Wonderment! An opponent voted against a vital issue - and should now be shunned by the American public. But before we ride anyone out on a rail, let's take a closer look.

Why would a political go-getter vote against a perfectly logical Bill? Well, at times it's a bit like buying a car. Something like this....

Customer Bill goes onto a car lot and chooses a pretty good looking car that has a pretty good looking price sticker attached to it. But once inside the finance office, things suddenly take a twist. That $15,000 car suddenly becomes a $25,000 car.

When Bill asks what the devil happened to the original price, the financial officer wastes no time in explaining.

Tax, title, license - oh, and that $15,000? Well, that was the base price - one that didn't include air-conditioning or an automatic transmission. That had to be added to the price, of course. And by the time that Bill figures up the entire cost of the vehicle after finance charges, he discovers that the car cost him more than double the original price tag.

As Bills pass before lawmakers, they may arrive in simplicity but by the time that they leave the floor they may have everything but the kitchen sink attached to them. And while the original Bill may have been something that the politician may have really wanted to vote for, once all the pork had been piled on - how could they with a clear conscious? And oh yes, some still do have a clear conscious. I think.....

So the next time that you hear a politician accuse another of voting against a logical Bill, ask questions and discover. Things aren't always as they appear.

Political Attack - Axing the Competition With Words

What happened to polite politicians? Or did they ever exist? Hum, must be election time. Time to slide the old ax blade on the tongue and chop the competition to smithereens. Oh my, things are getting nasty....

No one expects the parties to come out hugging and kissing one another - although, the Kiss of Judas has been known to occur from time-to-time. Talk about killing someone with kindness.

But after all, we are talking about 'parties' here, right? Parties are suppose to be fun, right? Civil? Upbeat? Intent on accomplishing something - if nothing else, right?

Unfortunately, not in the case of our current Political Powerhouse. At times, the bickering includes tongues substituted for weapons. And I thought that mother-in-laws were mean. Not hardly!

And frankly, those campaign ads which openly bash opponents give me the woollies. It's definitely getting old. In fact, these type ads remind me of a tattletale giving the bacon on another poor kid.

And most of the time, the ads are skewed. Yes indeed, everyone likes to look good - particularly politicians who generally have more cookie on their lips than lies in the jar.

And I must pause to ask myself, "With politicians acting more like spoiled kids than adults these days, why do I want to elect OR re-elect that?"

Look, Let's Be Clear

'Look' AND 'Let's be clear' are the two, most popular phrases used by politicians these days when they become cornered. Like rats, even.

In fact, these phrases are getting more popular than the word 'I' when politicians are being interviewed in the Hot Seat.

Reporters will fire out a point-blank question as the politician squirms a hole in their padded chair, then as they blink their eyes like window shades, they'll answer, "Look," OR "Let's be clear," and by the time that they've talked a good three and a half minutes with one solid line of garble (just long enough for the interviewer to run out of time), NO ONE is quite clear and as far as seeing anything ("Look"), the listener remains blinded to the issue.

So to those politicians who have hooked onto these catchy phrases, we say, "Look. Let's be clear. Just answer the darn question! A simple yes or no will do in most cases."

United States Engaged in Political Civil War

If we could cut through the invisible garble, we'd see a Republican armed with an oozie and a Democrat with a bazooka - both weapons aimed at one another in the form of a forked-tongue. As the American public looks into the glass Whitehouse, we see what our political decision makers can't see - a gang of grown kids squabbling over who gets to pull the wagon, oblivious to the American people sitting inside.

Sad but so, it doesn't look like relief is in store anytime soon. Both sides will continue to argue over who is the best and the brightest. Frankly, we might be better off if we had one party with several candidates so that the Blame Game would be centralized to the candidates attacking one another rather than the respective parties. And most Americans appear to be getting fed-up with party brawls.

Perhaps all the visible arguing represents a deeper, inner pool of trouble which appears evident in many politicians. Behavioral issues, alcohol dependency, drug use, financial mismanagement, and ethnic ignorance are just a few of recent stories involving our law makers that have recently unfolded in the news.

The desires of the American people are rather simple, something that most politicians cannot relate to. Americans want to be told the truth. Americans want a job - and a decent wage to go along with it. Americans want affordable food, housing and education. Americans want the ability to pay for heating and cooling during those sour months of the year. Americans want to be able to get health care when necessary - and they want security during those Golden Years. Americans want peace and to feel safe.

So how could anyone who already has all these things relate with those so in need?

Considering the high wages made by those in Washington in comparison with the common middle-class American, it just looks like these folks would at least act their age, doesn't it?

God, Guns & Politics

A Controversial Political Opinion

God's house is becoming the sacrificial mouthpiece for politicians. Why it's wrong, and what you can do about it.

My father, a minister, was appalled in the way that politics had advanced its way behind the pulpit. In all the years of hearing him preach, I can say with a clear conscious that not even once did my father use the pulpit to promote his staunch political beliefs. He was too busy talking about the love of God to do such a thing.

Why Promoting Politics in God's House is Wrong

The house of worship is intended exclusively for that - for worshiping our Maker. Although many religious institutions have noble aspirations in mind when it comes to politics, there is grave danger lurking under the Tapestry of Politics that has the power to demolish the freedom of religion that we so enjoy.

Promoting a particular politician may pose ill consequences as Believers tend to have a trusting nature. However, many times an individual yearning for political power will often say anything in order to reach his kismet. And once there, things can rapidly deteriorate, in turn destroying the very thing that we so-loved and cherished.

Although there is currently a separation of church and state, the church continues to shine in the limelight where politics are concerned. And with more and more precedence being given to this issue, there presents an unfortunate opportunity for backlash.

If you find that your sanctuary is locked in the battle of political correctness, I would highly advise you to speak with your clergy about this important issue. Take the privilege of voting in hand and vote how YOU want to vote. At church, Believers are Believers, and should not be perceived as a political base. Although there is much power in numbers, the ultimate power rests within our God.

Another issue that has troubled me greatly where politics are concerned is the issue of guns and God. On one hand we have Believers praising God, and in an instant they can revolve into a killing mood. I don't know everything, but I do know that peace in the past has been accomplished with many guns and bombs - and that peace has also been accomplished without them. And we must ask, which method is best for life?
