Touch of Fire - a free short romance story Where the Four Winds Meet - (444 pages) She was drawn back to the present as Leif drawled, "So, it's English you are so concerned about and not the weasel. Perhaps I have miscalculated-" "How did Sonny manage to get over here?" she demanded, her white-gold hair a beautiful mass about her angry looking face. She chose not to argue with this cowboy, rather to toss questions at him. It was much easier pinning the insect to the board than chasing it through a field of poison ivy she recklessly decided. He shrugged. "I believe he rode the mare Uranus - a rather fitting ride for a proctologist wouldn't you agree?" Camping Check Off List - The Greenhorn CamperA Short StoryHow do you know when you've packed too much for your camping trip? If your vehicle is listing to one side, or if it resembles the truck from the Beverly Hillbillies, you've probably packed too much. Perhaps it would be easier to attach four semi-truck tires to each corner of the house… It was a hot autumn day with no end of the heat in sight. Tom and I were stationed inside a small bait shop, the smell of fish heavy in the stagnant air. Catfish bait can get heady in small places. We were looking at a cheap ice chest; we'd left ours at home, deciding to travel light on this camping trip. I favored the 'pink' one but Tom was hesitant. There's just something about men and the color pink, I guess. We were down to two choices; the pink version and a camouflage offering that was etched on one side with a huge a black-widow spider. Nonetheless, as were we in the final stage of our decision a young couple entered the store with three kids in tow. Redheads; pre-teens; all boys. Now that's a handful! As Tom continued to check out the pink ice chest I took time to study the kids in the distance. They were occupied by a revolving display of lures that the owner of the store had set up for exhibition. The youngest child, who was referred to by his mother as Johnny, had managed to send the display into a fast orbit. The lures were lifting into the air as the display spun in fast motion with Johnny's mother working furiously to stop the 'revolver'. At this moment, I sensed that Johnny wasn't her favorite child. As I discretely watched with a smile fastened on my lips, something in the background captured my attention. Through the torn screen of the bait house, a red truck stood in the distance, the bed stacked about three feet over the cab. Either Jed Clampett had landed or…could it be…Greenhorn Campers? This assumption was suddenly verified when the father of the redheaded trio told the cashier, "This is our first camping trip and I was wondering if you could recommend a good spot to set out our tent?" The cashier scrubbed his left hand over his chin, a thoughtful look applied to his face. "First time camping, you say? Are you sure you have everything that you'll need?" Realization struck. The cashier was the store's owner - not a doubt in my mind! I watched as he masterfully played the Greenhorn Camper, casually loading the counter until it sagged, every now and then grumbling, "Yeah, you'll need that for sure. Oh! And this." "Honey, I think we'll take the pink one," Tom suddenly told me, drawing me from the trance. "The spider's just a bit too busy on the camouflage."
I offhandedly nodded, then took a swift inventory of the
items stacked on the counter for the Greenhorn Camper. Amid the stack was a
lighted key chain in the shape of a fish (the light projected out of the fish's
mouth), a 4-tiered tackle box, a red flyswatter shaped like a foot, a fishing
seine, and three other items that I was unable to identify. If you've never been camping, or if you are a Greenhorn Camper, here is a list that might help as you plan your camping trip. The 'must' items for an overnight camping trip include: -tent with a rain-fly Depending upon what you wish to eat, you may need a camp stove, fuel for the stove, cooking and eating utensils, plates and cups (and of course,d food). If your destination is equipped with cooking grills, you may need wood or charcoal, and lighter fluid. Be sure and pack a plastic tablecloth for your picnic table. Also, the amount and type of clothing that you will pack for your trip will be dependent upon the weather. If it's cold, don't forget your thermal socks, a couple of sweatshirts, a jacket and gloves. One last thing that you may want to consider taking along….an ice chest.
