How to Plan a Ghoulishly Good Halloween Party!

HOWLING GOOD SPOTS TO HAVE YOUR HALLOWEEN PARTY BASH

In A Barn

A barn with a loft makes the excellent spot for your Halloween Party.  Try taking a drive in the country and when you’ve located what you consider to be the perfect place for your shindig, stop and ask the owner for permission to use the wonderful barn.  Most will allow you to use a vacated barn for free as long as you clean up after the party.  If not, beg.

Barns with lofts work best.  Also, try to find a barn that is surrounded with trees.  You can hang a lot of things from trees, such as Halloween lanterns, twinkling orange or white lights, ghosts, bats and snakes. Yikes!  Oh wait – they’re fake.

The loft in the barn is an excellent spot to setup a Fortune Teller’s domain.  People love crystal balls.  You can use a large crystal paperweight to achieve the crystal ball effect, or an inverted cut-glass bowl.  Round fish bowls can also be converted nicely by filling them with clear marbles, then inverting the bowl on the table.  Cover the base with a black velvet cloth before flipping. Black’s the color of the night; it’s enchanting, mysterious, scary and eludes the unknown.  Ask your Fortune Teller to dress gypsy-style and bring her Translyvanian accent to the party with her.

Ask one guest at your party to dress as Frankenstein.  As your guests arrive, station Frank in the loft window of the barn.  That’s a guaranteed thriller!  Be sure and have Frank extend his arms and moan a lot!  If it’s dark at the top of the loft, or if the moon isn’t full, you may need to make use of a small flashlight.  Just don’t shine it into Frank’s eyes, especially when he’s prancing close to the ledge of the loft window.  His face will revert from green to white in a flash!

Bales of hay can be strewn around the floor of the loft and the lower base of the barn.  Be sure to decorate with the hay before putting out your goodies or they’ll be dusted with bits of the hay. However, gummy worms and bugs are acceptable to use as food decorations.

In A Gazebo

If you’re fortunate enough to have a gazebo in your back yard, what a wonderful spot for your Halloween party!  It’s like having a giant cobweb draped over your guests!

Make the gazebo the center of your party by spacing games and goody tables on the outskirts. You can even convert the gazebo into a haunted house.  Be sure and put the music machine of your choice here so the sound will be balanced throughout the party grounds.

In The Country

There’s a lot of wide-open space in the country and with it comes so many great Halloween ideas! Invest in some dry ice to create a haunting effect; place white tombstones throughout the area, or pumpkins for a friendlier motif.

In the event that you don’t live in the country, or you don’t know anyone in the country, again – take a ride and scope out the possibilities.

State Park Or Recreation Area

Be sure to call ahead and check the park’s guidelines.  Some limit people per campsite, but generally that pertains to overnight sleeping guests in the same campsite.

Some parks and recreation areas have pavilions or large rooms that you can use – sometimes for free!  Remember to cut the noise in accordance with the park’s rules.

If you are able to hold your bash at a park, there’s nothing like a glittering campfire to put fright into a well-spun ghost tale!  Don’t forget to have everyone hold their flashlight in front of their face.  It’s guaranteed to be a Kodak Moment!

For party food, stock up on Jiffy Pop Popcorn, hot dog or hamburger fixings, beans, chips, dips and canned soda.  Volunteer a skeleton crew to man the grill.  For dessert, bring out some bags of Halloween candy, or pre-bake some ghostly cookies for your guests.

Try to be creative when you are contemplating your containers for your food and drinks.  For instance, the sodas would be extra scary planted in a black caldron filled with crushed ice!  Metal tubs with cobwebs draped around them also make lovely Halloween pieces.

For decorations, dress some yard frogs in witch’s hats and space them around the area.

Hang a giant spider on a worn-out casting net (that’s defined as a beat up fishing net for the girls who never fish).

Drape some Halloween lights around the party area for a festive effect.  Don’t forget to bring your CD player for the eerie Halloween music.

Top off the celebration with an old fashioned hayride!  If you don’t have a buckboard wagon lying around, use a pickup truck.  Scatter the back with hay, give everyone a flashlight, bring along your freaky music and hit the Halloween trail.  October moons are almost always breathtaking.  They tend to be more orange in autumn and seem to hang lower in the horizon.  Your guests will cherish the memories of this enchanted evening!

By The Lake

It doesn’t get any scarier than this!   Why not have a Hobo Halloween Party?  Ask your guests to dress as hobos and bring along a can of something to toss into your Hobo Stew or Stone Soup. These food-brews are great served with biscuits or cornbread.  You can hang your stew pot over a campfire for an added effect.

Purchase some glow-in-the dark fire sticks and provide each guest with one.  Pick out some fun songs to groan by.  If one of your guests can play a guitar or a portable keyboard, they will add joy and life to your party.

Provide some bubblegum cigars for your guests to add to the authenticity of the party.  A few blown up hats filled with moth holes work well, too.

It’s best to have a base for the Hobo Stew and a good stone for the Stone Soup.  You do want your meal to taste good!

Be sure to include several trays of Halloween snacks and goodies to accompany the Hobo Stew.
