As a new Webmaster, one of your first questions probably went something like this, "Just how risky and reliable are cheap hosting companies?" My experience ranges from totally satisfied to "I want to pull all my hair AND brains out!" Hiring Your Host - Whenever a Webmaster chooses a host, it's actually a paid-for-hire. If your host was free (i.e. free webpage) then you probably wouldn't expect much. However, some people do - which is very hard to believe when you're getting something for nothing. So during your hiring phase, research your host extremely well. Don't be timid about writing an email to ask for the answers to any questions you may have. But take note: 'Their response time is NOT a very good mirror of their 'after the purchase' performance.' In the beginning, they'll do anything within their realm to pull you into their fold. And then....well, if you've chosen a poor host, they'll fold YOU. So choose wisely! If you don't know beans about site management, check out some of the free forums on the Internet before you dive in. What I can tell you to expect is this: - If you want a successful website, be prepared to send a GOOD DEAL of time. You must invest to harvest. - Start out SMALL. While your traffic grows, be researching other hosting services that can accommodate your growth and business/site needs. - Many hosts offer bells and whistles - which can be a big plus to the Greenhorn Webmaster.
