Free Webmaster Web Tips, Protecting Your Graphics From Internet Pirates - Monkey See - Monkey TakeAs time goes by and your arsenal of articles starts to stack up, you may want to consider inner-article linking. Bandwidth is a huge issue with the struggling Webmaster. You've got a noteworthy site, and have sunk hours of work into your production while others have played. It's about time for your hard work to begin paying off! Suddenly you note that your bandwidth has skyrocketed. Joy! Finally you've reached Payoff Time! Your spirits ignite and fall to the ground as you discover that your bandwidth isn't coming in the form of traffic - rather from an Internet Pirate who has stolen your snazzy graphic OR graphics. And it may be more than one Pirate! How can your graphics be stolen if they are still on your page? The Internet Pirate links to your graphic so that when THEIR PAGE where they posted YOUR GRAPHIC is viewed by Internet Surfers, it sucks up YOUR BANDWIDTH by downloading from your site. Surfers aren't seeing your site, though - and they aren't even able to see that the graphic is stolen. But your bandwidth record catches all. A good way to snuff out Graphic Piracy is to protect your graphics with coding. So you may want to investigate this avenue a bit further. There is also software that will rotate your graphics which might be of help. Another way to discourage Piracy is to change the name of your graphics frequently, though this can be a pain or an impossiblity if you have a sizable website. There's certainly nothing wrong with placing a friendly warning at the top of your page instructing the Pirate that thievery is prohibited at your site. However, just how far can a thief be trusted? If you do discover that your bandwidth is being eaten up like a sweater in a room of moths, research the link backs. If you don't know how to do that, here is a simple way using the highly popular Google Toolbar: - Go to your webstats and search for your most popular links. Click on the link then at the top of the Google Toolbar, choose 'backward links'. There are several ways in which you can uncover that nasty Pirate, so seek out and find the one that is best for you. In the meantime, try giving your graphics unusual names so that they are easier to locate in this-type situation. It also doesn't hurt to give your graphic a short description using your site's mainstay-keywords. In the meantime, here's wishing you "happy sailing" in a sea filled with nasty Internet Pirates.
